What basic strategy solves
Basic strategy compares hit, stand, double, split, and surrender decisions against the dealer upcard. The correct play changes with rules such as decks, H17 or S17, DAS, surrender, and blackjack payout.
Why it matters for counters
Card counting does not replace basic strategy. It adds a smaller set of exceptions on top of it. If the base decisions are leaking money, a counting edge disappears before the ramp can matter.
How to train it
Start with the rule-aware chart, then use random hand drills until common hard totals, soft doubles, pairs, and surrender hands are automatic.
